Fashions change, trends evolve, and tastes transform over the years. However, there are pieces of jewelry that remain unchanged in the hearts of those who wear them. Medals are one of them, and I see it in the shop every day: it is our clients who tell us, almost inadvertently, the story that connects them to the medal they are looking for.
Much more than an accessory, a medal is a symbol. It can represent protection, faith, love, belonging, or simply the memory of a special person. Perhaps that is why they remain one of the most gifted pieces of jewelry for life's important moments, and continue to be passed down from generation to generation with the same emotion as they did decades ago.
A jewel with centuries of history
Medals and other devotional objects have been part of European tradition for centuries. Throughout time, they have accompanied pilgrimages, religious celebrations, and personal memories. That symbolic dimension is still alive today: a medal can speak of faith, protection, belonging, or simply of a person and a moment we want to keep close.
My way of reinterpreting tradition
When I started designing medals, I did not want to repeat exactly what already existed. I wanted something as classic as a medal to be recognizable, but to carry my understanding of jewelry: rustic, textured, intentionally imperfect pieces, where you can tell they have been touched by a hand and not a mold.
Over time, this has become a personal hallmark. Today, when someone sees a Sandra Bellew medal, they usually recognize it almost without needing to look for my stamp—not because it is the flashiest, but because of that rustic and personal character I strive to imprint on every piece that leaves the workshop.
Sentimental value above material value
The most important pieces are not always the largest or the most expensive. I have verified this many times: a simple medal often holds more emotion than a piece of great economic value. Behind it, there is usually a story—a grandmother who gave it to her granddaughter, a mother who wanted to leave a lasting keepsake, or a celebration that marked an important stage in life.
That emotional component is precisely what makes medals timeless. While other pieces of jewelry respond to passing trends, medals endure because they represent memories that never go out of style.
Medals today
In my workshop, I continue to see how medals hold a prominent place in very specific moments. People choose them above all to celebrate:
- Births
- Baptisms
- First Communions
- Confirmations
- Weddings
- Anniversaries
- Special birthdays
- Meaningful family gifts
I am increasingly asked for personalized medals, with initials, dates, engravings, or symbols that reflect the personal history of the person who will wear them. That combination of tradition and personalization is what makes each piece unique, even when starting from a classic design.
A piece of jewelry to accompany you for life
One of the great virtues of medals is their versatility. They can be worn daily, combined with other chains, or as a statement piece. They adapt to both classic and contemporary styles, and retain their meaning intact regardless of current trends.
Furthermore, they are pieces that age well. The passage of time does not diminish their emotional value—on the contrary, it usually increases it. Each mark of time becomes part of their history.
The art of creating a handcrafted medal
Making a handcrafted medal is a process very different from industrial manufacturing. It begins with the selection of materials, continues with soldering and modeling—the same techniques I learned years ago and still use today on every piece—and ends with meticulous care for every finish and detail.
That dedication is what allows for the creation of jewelry meant to last for generations. Craftsmanship also provides a unique character, impossible to reproduce in a mass production process: every medal that leaves my workshop retains the touch of the person who designed and crafted it by hand.
Our rustic medals are born precisely from this idea: imperfect pieces with unique details, conceived as objects of personal devotion and as a tribute to a cultural heritage that belongs to us all. We make them in Madrid, in silver and brass, and accompany them with hand-dyed silk ribbons for hanging and adornment. The result is that balance I always seek in a piece: something delicate and, at the same time, robust.
A gift that never loses meaning
Choosing a medal is choosing a story. It is gifting a symbol that will accompany a person for years, and that will likely continue to be part of their life long after the moment they received it.
Perhaps that is the reason why, generation after generation, medals continue to move us. Because they are not just jewelry. They are memories that can always be kept close to the heart.
